Cardiac Catheter Labs
Cardiac Catheter Labs, Aberdeen
Two purpose-designed cardiac catheter laboratories, at the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. The new laboratories, with state-of-the-art specialist equipment, represented a £4.5 million investment in improving cardiac care for patients in the NHS Grampian area, as well as from Orkney, Shetland, Highland and Tayside.
The new laboratories, provide patients with diagnostic angiograms, to diagnose certain heart conditions, angioplasty therapy, and electrophysiology procedures, which include pacemaker or defibrillator implantation, among other highly specialised procedures.
It is expected more than 3,000 patients use the new premises each year, which include four three-bedded wards and a patient recovery unit. The site is next to the current cardiology in-patient wards and out-patient department, and is connected by a new internal corridor linked to the acute hospital complex. It will ultimately connect to an emergency care centre, planned for south of the site.
